Learning Environment

Leslie Walker – Secondary

A teacher creates an atmosphere where the learner feels unashamed and are able to express themselves during learning and non-learning moments.

School can be challenging enough, so when trying to dive in head first, it might be scary. Students need a place of comfort, but they also need a place of exploration. With the different places that we are able to visit because of technology, resources available nearby, and by creating the safe space, students will learn more than ever.

Artifacts:
1.) We would go explore different areas on campus which connect to the lesson being taught. (ex. Hatchet – going to sit in the woods and listen to the surrounds, then compare to what you, the student, would have done in Brian’s case). This space allows the students to get out and experience something they never would have if they were sitting in four walls all day long. This is an example of what the students would be doing: (Received from https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/thunder-bay/forest-school-keewatin-public-1.4597656).

2.) I would create an online classroom to help the students maintain classwork assignments, grades, contact others if necessary, and collaborate without having to be there in person. With this, the students gain more knowledge of the technology world, but they still are able to keep up with the world inside the school.

3.) Respect is key to a well-kept classroom, so I would create respect “contracts”. Basically like signing the honor code, I will not accept any rules being broken. The classroom is suppose to be a place where there is no judgement if someone does not understand, they do not get penalized. I think a well kept environment requires the people inside of it to know what the expectations are.
